Nobel Prize in Physics 2025

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award the Nobel Prize in Physics 2025 to John Clarke, Michel H. Devoret and John M. Martinis “for the discovery of macroscopic quantum mechanical tunnelling and energy quantisation in an electric circuit”.

The Nobel Prize in Physics 2025 and IYQ

Erich Runge is head of the Group of Theoretical Physics I and director of the Institute of Physics at the TU Ilmenau.

Chair of the EPS Condensed Matter Division, he comments on this year's Nobel Prize in Physics.

He also interviewed Ulrich Eckern, an expert in mesoscopic physics.

Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2025

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award the Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2025 to:
- Susumu Kitagawa,
- Richard Robson and
- Omar M. Yaghi

for the development of metal–organic frameworks.”

Through the development of metal–organic frameworks, the laureates have provided chemists with new opportunities for solving some of the challenges we face.

Celebrating Excellence: EPS Nuclear Physics Awards at EuNPC 2025

in September, the European nuclear physics community convened in Caen, France, for the 6th European Nuclear Physics Conference (EuNPC2025), the flagship event of the EPS Nuclear Physics Division.

During the conference dinner, the EPS NPD prizes were presented to the winners.

Australia: Talks on joining Horizon Europe

The European Commission and the Australian Government have launched non-binding exploratory discussions in view of Australia’s possible association with Horizon Europe, the EU’s flagship research and innovation programme.

Exploratory talks will focus on Australia’s possible association with Pillar II of Horizon Europe.

The EU and Japan on the association with Horizon Europe in 2025

The European Union and Japan reaffirmed their commitment to deepen cooperation in research and innovation.

This would allow Japanese researchers and organisations to participate on equal footing with their EU counterparts in the 2026/2027 Work Programme.

Call for the 3rd Applied Nuclear Physics Conference (ANP2027)

The board of the EPS Nuclear Physics Division is seeking candidates to host the third edition of the ANP Conference, after the successful editions held in Prague in September 2021 and in Thessaloniki in September 2024.

ERC: Video tutorial for ERC grants

By watching the ERC Classes, a series of practical videos, you will learn everything you need to know about the ERC application and evaluation process for ERC grants.

2025 IgNobel Prize in Physics

A group of Italian physicists studied the "Phase behaviour of Cacio e Pepe sauce". They were awarded the satirical prize "for discoveries about the physics of pasta sauce, especially the phase transition that can lead to clumping, which can be a cause of unpleasantness."

EuChemS Awards

The call for nominations is now open for the EuChemS Awards.

The deadline is 15th December 2025.

EuChemS, the European Chemical Society, is an umbrella organisation representing national chemical societies and a Collaborating Society of the EPS

EPL news

A Physics World podcast features physicists Ada Altieri and Silvia De Monte, who use statistical physics to understand the behaviour of ecological communities.

Their work highlights the challenges and potential breakthroughs in understanding these communities.

EPL, who sponsored the episode, also supported early-career researchers through various international awards and events in 2025.
