During the EPS Council held in Vilnius on 15th-16th May, José María De Teresa, EPS President-Elect since 2025, took over from Mairi Sakellariadou as EPS President.

The European Physical Society is delighted to announce its 2026 distinctions and awards.

Alessandro Volta Prize 2025

The European Physial Society and Acinque are happy to announce that the Alessandro Volta Prize 2025 is awarded to Jean Dalibard for "his pioneering contributions to laser cooling and light–matter interactions, and for groundbreaking experimental and theoretical achievements in the quantum 
many-body physics of ultracold gases.

EPS NPD Prize for Applied Nuclear Physics 2026: Call for nominations

The board of the Nuclear Physics Division of the European Physical Society calls for nominations for the 2026 EPS NPD Prize for Applied Nuclear Physics.

Deadline for nominations: 26th September 2026. 

The CERN Council decided to update the European Strategy for Particle Physics

Launched in March 2024, the update of the European Strategy for Particle Physics (ESPP) is a bottom-up process designed to develop a visionary and concrete plan for the future of the field.

ANP 2027

ANP2027 is the third edition of the Applied Nuclear Physics conference series organized by the EPS.

The conference series focuses on applications of nuclear physics in areas such as energy, health, space, security, the environment, materials science, and the preservation and study of cultural heritage.

Eiffel Tower honour for women physicists

On 26th January 2026, the French association Femmes & Sciences presented the Mayor of Paris with a list of 72 female scientists whose names are to be inscribed on the Eiffel Tower.

Among them is Claudine 
Hermann
, a former EPS member and former president of the European Platform of Women in Science.

A fascination for research: 69 girls explore GSI/FAIR on Girls’ Day 2026

This nationwide German event is designed to encourage girls to learn about careers where women have traditionally been underrepresented. 
At GSI/FAIR, 69 schoolgirls participated and explored the international research centre. 

GSI is an EPS Associate Member. 

Oxford University Press to publish EPL

Oxford University Press (OUP) has announced a major new agreement with the EPL Association to publish their prestigious peer-reviewed journal EPL from 1st January 2027.

The journal will join OUP’s portfolio of more than 500 titles, three-quarters of which are published on behalf of learned and professional societies.

Biology for Physics

The 3rd Biology for Physics Conference, “Energy and Information in Living Matter”, will take place in Barcelona from 6th-10th September 2026.

It will bring together leading scientists at the forefront of exploring how energy and information shape living systems. Over recent years, their work has illuminated fundamental constraints of life, from molecular machines to cells, neural networks, and developmental processes.

The deadline for submission of abstracts has been extended to 22nd June.
