The 16th May is the International Day of Light. Learn more about this day on the website of UNESCO and see the events organised throughout 2022.

The Charpak-Ritz prize was awarded to Laura Baudis

The Charpak-Ritz Prize 2022  was awarded to Laura Baudis, "for her leadership in international astro-particle physics collaborations, outreach activities and seminal contributions to dark matter research."

The Charpak Ritz Prize is jointly given by the French and the Swiss Physical societies.

Astronomers reveal first image of the black hole at the heart of our galaxy

On 12th May, astronomers from a global research team unveiled the first image of the supermassive black hole at the centre of our own Milky Way galaxy. The image was produced by a global research team called the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) Collaboration.

EPS Young Minds Lisbon: Mental Health@Técnico

The Lisbon Young Minds section organised the event at their home institution, Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), with the goal of discussing the very important topic of mental health, with a particular emphasis on academic contexts.

The Physics Benevolent Fund of the Institute of Physics has been extended to support the professional physicists affected by the war in Ukraine.

The Sponsoring Consortium for Open Access Publishing in Particle Physics program, the world’s largest disciplinary open access initiative, has been formally extended by two years.

ICO Prizes

The International Commission for Optics (ICO), an international scientific society, established the ICO Prize in 1982.

Skilling Me Softly

Skills4Science specializes in helping the scientific community develop and/or enhance soft skills. Their workshops offer a diverse range of training topics to strengthen these skills, including problem solving, networking, public speaking, written communication and transformational leadership.

Telescopes for All 2022

Telescopes for All is a project spearheaded by the IAU Office for Astronomy Outreach, Sterren Schitteren Voor Iedereen, Bresser, and Leiden University. Their aim is to distribute 15 telescopes to underserved communities around the world.

Muon cooling and acceleration

Muons, which were discovered in the 1930s and first generated using an accelerator half a century after their discovery, are now widely used in several scientific fields such as particle physics and material science.

Recent advancements in cooling techniques have reduced the phase-space volume of muon beams and driven the effort to realize muon acceleration, which has now been demonstrated for the first time. This paper reviews the current state of muon cooling and acceleration technologies.

The meeting will take place from 3rd-7th July in Barcelona, Spain.

BPU11 Congress
The conference will be held from 28th August to 1st September in Belgrade, Serbia.

Summer School of Science Croatia 2022
The summer school will take place between 24th July and 14th August in Požega, Croatia.
